India Experiences Record Crop Production for 2022-23

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates for 2022-23 of the major crop productions, revealing a foodgrain production of 3235.54 Lakh Tonnes for the current agricultural year. This record production is higher by 79.38 LMT as compared to the previous year, and this success is a result of the hard work of farmers and scientists and concerted government policies.

Agriculture sector thriving due to hard work of farmers and scientists

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, said, “The agriculture sector is flourishing every day, thanks to the proficiency of scientists, the hard work of farmers, and the government’s farmer-friendly policies led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Tomar also appreciated the increase in the production of coarse grains and expressed hope that there would be further increase in the production and use of coarse grains/nutritious grains in the coming years. This is crucial as the United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently given the name of ‘Sri Anna’ to coarse grains/nutritious grains.

Record Crop Production

India’s total foodgrain production is estimated at a record 3235.54 lakh tonnes for the current agricultural year. Total production of Rice during 2022-23 is estimated at a record 1308.37 lakh tonnes, which is higher by 18.08 lakh tonnes than the previous year. Wheat production is estimated at 115.00 lakh tonnes, which is lower than the previous year due to unfavourable weather conditions in some parts of the country.

However, the production of coarse cereals, including maize, bajra, jowar, and ragi, is estimated to be at an all-time high of 201.80 lakh tonnes, which is 16.55 lakh tonnes more than the previous year. Pulses production is estimated to be at 253.90 lakh tonnes, which is also a record high, with an increase of 21.67 lakh tonnes from the previous year.

The production of oilseeds, such as groundnut, soybean, and sunflower, is estimated to be 41.47 lakh tonnes, which is an increase of 0.67 lakh tonnes from the previous year. Sugarcane production is estimated to be 365.70 crore tonnes, which is an increase of 23.20 crore tonnes from the previous year. Cotton production is estimated to be 336.40 lakh bales, which is higher than the previous year.

The agriculture sector in India is flourishing, with record-high production of foodgrains, pulses, and coarse cereals. This is a result of the collective efforts of farmers, scientists, and the government’s farmer-friendly policies. With the International Year of Millets declared for 2023, and the government’s focus on promoting nutritious grains, the future looks bright for the agriculture sector in India.
