UP’s first private defence manufacturing facility: A shining example of public-private partnership

In yet another shining example of Public-Private Partnership, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated UP’s first operationalised private sector defence manufacturing facility under the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), Lucknow.

The defence manufacturing facility will be operated by Aerolloy Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PTC industries, which manufactures best-in-class technologies of super-critical cast metal components for aerospace and defence applications.

The facility will manufacture spares for Helicopter Engines, Aircraft Engines, Structural parts for aircraft, Drones & UAVs, Submarines, Ultra-Light Artillery Guns, Space Launch Vehicles, Strategy Systems among others.

Applauding the PTC Industries Limited, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said,” The two units will prove to be major milestones in the path of self-reliance in defence in the times to come.”

The Defence Minister also appreciated the fact that PTC supplies products to renowned companies in India and abroad, contributing to the Government’s vision of transforming India into a net defence exporter.

Recently, PTC Industries Limited obtained the clearance certificate of Critical On-line Fittings (OLFs) for defence applications from the Defence Ministry. The clearance is a major step in ‘Make-in-India’ and achieving self-reliance in the defence ecosystem.

Make-in-India’ for the World

Reaffirming the imperative role of ‘Make-in-India’ for the world, the Union Minister listed out a series of measures undertaken to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in the defence sector.

The list comprised two positive lists of more than 200 products to increase exports, Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, setting up of Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh & Tamil Nadu, 64 percent of its modernisation funds, free of cost Transfer of Technology (ToT) of DRDO and Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative.
In an all-out effort to provide a suitable growth environment to the private sector, opportunities to build a Mega Defence Programme have been opened up, including fighter aircraft, helicopters, tanks and submarines through a strategic partnership model which provide major fillip for private firms.

It is noteworthy that in the last seven years, India’s defence exports have crossed the mark of Rs 38,000 crore and more than 10,000 SMEs have joined in the defence sector.

In a first, Nagpur-based ammunition firm delivered Multi-Mode Grenades to the Indian Army

For the first time in the Indian defence ecosystem, Nagpur-based private company Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) delivered the first consignment of high-quality grenades to the Indian Army in August this year.

The subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited, EEL was awarded the Rs 400 crore contract for manufacturing 10 lakh grenades for the Indian Army. Prior to this, the Indian Army had been using the British-era vintage hand grenades, which were replaced by Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG).

The new advanced Multi-mode grenade has been designed jointly by Economic Explosives Limited along with Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The grenade offers multiple advantages to soldiers in terms of safety and penetration attack as compared to the vintage hand grenades.

The advanced grenade has dual-mode – defensive and offensive. In the offensive mode, the grenade doesn’t have a fragment sleeve and is used for the low-intensity attacks as it offers stunning effects. The mode is used when the soldier targets the attack within five meters from the point of burst.

In defensive mode, the grenade is assembled with its fragmenting sleeve. This mode of the grenade is used when the soldier is in the shelter and the enemy is in the open area. Its lethal radius has a capacity to target eight meters from the point of burst.
