Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday defended the three farm Bills that have been passed by the Lok Sabha this week, assuring the farmers that the proposed legislations were in the interest of the farmers.

Speaking during a virtual event to inaugurate several projects including a key rail bridge in poll-bound Bihar, PM Modi said the Bills passed in the Lok Sabha yesterday were historic and an important day of reforms.

“These Bills unshackle our farmers from many restrictions. These reforms will provide more options and opportunities to our farmers to sell their produce. These reforms will remove middlemen who exist between farmers and consumers and claim a huge chunk of farmers’ earnings,” the PM said, seeking to blunt the opposition to the farm bills that has seen a key ally make its minister quit the Union Cabinet.

“These Bills are raksha kavach for farmers. However, there are some who had been ruling the country for decades, they are now misleading the farmers on this issue. They are lying to the farmers,” the PM said, hitting out at those opposed to the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.

“They used to make tall claims and promises to farmers before elections but used to forget the same after polls. All this is there in their manifestos, but today when the BJP is ushering in these reforms, these people are misleading farmers on the issue.

“They are opposing reforms in agriculture market. They are forgetting the farmer of today is alert and aware. He is watching who are these people who are standing with the middlemen. Only the BJP has fulfilled the promises made to farmers,” the PM said further.

He sought to assure farmers by stating that the government is not diluting MSP regime or deciding against government procurement of agriculture produce.

“It’s a fake claim that farmers will not get MSP benefit from the government or the government will not procure their produce. My government is committed to provide farmers the right price through MPS, and also the government procurement will continue as before,” Modi said.
