Power Roll, a UK-based company has roped in India for the manufacturing and marketing of its solar films. The company has developed a solar film that is 25 times lighter and cheaper than solar panels.
The solar film as claimed by the Power Roll is unique, low-cost, and lightweight in nature, The company is also expanding into the Indian market with Thermax Group as its market development and manufacturing partner.
India is a rising star in the field of green energy. It has become a new hub for investment in renewable energy. India has registered exponential growth in the renewable energy sector in the past five years due to conductive policy, capital flow, falling prices, and new technologies.
Moreover, India along with France led the International Solar Alliance to promote solar energy in 121 tropical countries.
With 8.3 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed in the year 2018, India became World’s third-largest solar energy producer in a mere five years’ time. Photovoltaic capacity is the capacity at which the sun’s light or energy is converted into electricity using a semiconductor that exhibits the photovoltaic effect.
However, solar panels still had to be imported into India at a costly price. But, with the entry of Power Roll’s flexible solar film, the market dynamics are sure to hit a change and benefit India as a solar energy producer.
As part of the agreement, the companies would engage in identifying applications for lightweight solar film and green energy solutions.
In addition to it, the companies will also engage in the transmission of know-how on low-cost production processes and efficiency. To create a market for solar films in India, the companies will also look at identifying the probable market.
Thermax would also have the licence to manufacture and sell Power Roll’s solar films in India.
About Power Roll’s solar film
According to the claims made by the company, the company’s solar film will deliver the lowest levelised cost of electricity for any solar technology, is 25 times lighter than silicon PV, and has a carbon footprint that is 20 times lower.
Power Roll’s technology simplifies manufacturing by using high-speed roll-to-roll production processes that eliminate many costly processes.
What could it mean for India?
The fact that an Indian company was chosen for the manufacturing and marketing of a product, means that the company saw India as a potential player and market to expand and grow. This also signifies how India has scope for Power Roll’s technological advancement.
With this partnership, India’s dependency on the import of solar energy will reduce, to almost nil. In 2018-19, India imported $2.16 billion worth of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells, panels, and modules. Moreover, India will enter the solar energy market as a market developer and manufacturer.
The agreement between Thermax and Power Roll would also facilitate the regional growth and development of India. The company’s lightweight solar film and disruptive price point would also expand the range of applications for solar energy.
