Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual Summit with Australian P Scott Morrison on 04th June 2020. The two leaders exchanged warm regards for each other, and PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the Australian PM for taking care of the Indian Students studying in Australia.
A New Model of India-Australia Partnership PM Modi termed it a new model of India – Australia partnership as he began with pitching for a coordinated and collaborative approach to overcome the adverse economic impact and the Pandemic which has killed over 3 lakh people globally. It’s PM’s first virtual bilateral summit with a foreign leader. PM Modi said his discussion with his “Friend” Scott Morrison was outstanding.
PM Modi also highlighted the reforms that India has taken during these testing times, and he is confident to see the results at the ground level.
Perfect Time and Perfect opportunity
The Prime Minister said he believes that it’s a perfect time and perfect opportunity to strengthen the relationship between India and Australia. Australia has been a trusted ally of India; it supports India’s Membership of UNSC and NSG. Australia also supported the UNSC resolution to declare Masood Azhar a global terrorist.
The Famous Modi Hug PM Scott Morrison expressed his love for the Gujarati dish “Khichdi”, and he recollected about the famous “Modi hug”. Australian PM referred to PM Modi’s hologram campaign ahead of the 2014 Indian General Elections. Morrison also said Australia might try to use it to conduct further meetings in the view of COVID19 Pandemic. Scott Morrison earlier shared his picture with “samosas”,and he recalled, “We had a bit of fun with them”. The Indian PM was delighted to hear the Australian leader talking about “Khichdi”, and he replied “Excellency I am very pleased to have your support. The people of Gujarat must’ve been really happy when you mentioned Khichdi. There are a lot of Gujarati families staying in Australia as well and they will be happier. Khichdi is found in all corners of India and enjoys huge popularity although its known indifferent names”.

The MEA has said that India and Australia signed/announced 9 agreements after talks between PM Modi and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.

- Framework arrangement on cyber and cyber-enabled critical Technology Corporation — Signed.
- More you on cooperation in the field of mining and processing of critical and strategic minerals — Signed.
- An arrangement concerning mutual logistics support MLSA — Signed.
- Implementing arrangement concerning cooperation in defence Science and technology to the MoU on Defence cooperation — Signed.
- Understanding on cooperation in the field of Public Administration and governance reforms — Signed.
- Memorandum of understanding on cooperation in vocational education and training — Signed.
- Memorandum of understanding on water resources management — Signed.
The accord permits Indian Airforce and Navy war ships to refuel and access maintenance facilities. This is of paramount importance to counter the Chinese aggression. India also has a similar pact with the United states of America.
