In Ladakh, the polling for the 26 constituencies of General Council Election of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, (LAHDC), Leh being held today. The 6th LAHDC, Leh Council Elections are first elections after Ladakh became a Union Territory. The term of the present BJP-led LAHDC ends by 30th of this month. In the 30-member General Council, the elections are held for 26 while four members are nominated from principal minorities.
AIR correspondent reports,to elect 26 Councilors of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council in Leh , the polling is being held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fate of 94 candidates will be sealed in the EVM today. There are 89 thousand and eight hundred forty five registered voters for the LAHDC polls and this time larger turnout of voters is expected as the expat students are back at home due to COVID pandemic.
It is the first election during the COVID-19 pandemic and after the formation of Ladakh as Union Territory. Foolproof security arrangements and COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures have been arranged by the election authority to ensure free and fair election. The ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress parties are contesting for all the 26 constituencies while the first timer AAP has fielded it’s candidates for 19 seats. Twenty three Independent candidates are also in fray.
