NCW launches ‘Empowering women through legal services’ campaign on Independence Day

National Commission for Women, in collaboration with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) launched a campaign on empowering women through legal services on the occasion of 74th Independence Day. The campaign aims “to make women aware of the channels available for grievance redressal.”

Campaign launched in 8 states

NCW has launched the campaign in eight states- Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The women rights body said, “NCW has been regularly conducting legal awareness programmes but this time in collaboration with NALSA we aim to reach out to women in every district creating legal awareness among women from remote areas”

Highlighting the importance of imparting legal awareness to women and girls, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said that there can be no women empowerment if women are not aware of their legal rights.

The campaign broadly has three objectives:

  1. To make women aware of various organs of the justice delivery system available for grievance redressal.
  2. To make women aware of the procedure of approaching and utilizing channels available for grievance redressal.
  3. To sensitise women and girls about their rights as provided under various laws.

‘Women have fought two battles simultaneously’

It has been 73 years since India gained independence from British rule. However, women in the country continue to struggle with issues such as safety, discrimination, and economic independence. NCW said, “Women across the world have fought two battles simultaneously, freedom for their country and for themselves. We have come a long way in claiming our rightful place in society and there is still more to go.”
