PM Modi’s ‘Sanitary pads at Re 1′ remark wins netizens’ hearts. “All respect Sir !!!”

The 74th Independence Day was observed with a silent gusto due to the ongoing pandemic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the national flag at Delhi’s Red Fort. With the coronavirus norms in place, a limited number of audience was allowed to witness Modi give his seventh consecutive address at the iconic monument to the country.

In his speech, he talked about various things. Right from COVID-19 to the ‘COVID Warriors’ to the soldiers protecting our borders, these were some of the highlights of his address. He also spoke of women empowerment and the initiatives the government has brought about for the women of this country.

However, a remark he made which was not only unexpected from him but also extremely praiseworthy for the netizens. Modi talked about sanitary pads in his speech, possibly a first for any prime minister to talk about it on a public platform, and that too on such an auspicious day of the country.

Modi said in a part of his speech, “The government has always been concerned about the health of our daughters and sisters. Through 6000 Janaushdhi centers, about 5 crore women have got sanitary pads at Re 1.”

Along with this, he also mentioned the work that is done by them towards eradicating malnutrition among women, more women in combat roles for the Navy and the Air Force, and the abolishing of Triple Talaq for Muslim women.

For something like sanitary pads being talked about at a platform on a day like Independence Day has struck a chord with the public. Netizens thronged to social media and appreciated Modi for breaking a taboo towards something as normal as menstruation. Here are some of the reactions.

The pandemic did not dampen the spirits of Indians as many celebrated Independence Day in their own way. From artworks to posting wishes on social media, the country was together even during such dreary times.
