IPS Amitabh Gupta, who gave travel permit to Wadhawans during lockdown, appointed Pune Police commissioner

IPS officer Amitabh Gupta, who was embroiled in a controversy for granting written permission to Wadhawans to travel to Mahabaleshwar during the nationwide coronavirus-induced lockdown in April, has been appointed as Pune Police Commissioner.

A huge controversy had erupted after 23 members of the Wadhawan family, violated lockdown orders, and headed to the hill station near Mumbai in five cars, even as the entire country remained confined to their homes.  When the authorities learnt about their presence, the civic bodies had sent the members of the Wadhawan family to a quarantine facility in Maharashtra’s Satara district.

There were instructions from the top as Gupta was given a clean chit in the entire episode and appointed as Pune Police chief within four months. In his explanation before the inquiry commission, Gupta had said that he used to receive numerous such applications and in good faith, he passed Wadhawans’ application.

Following the uproar over the incident, the Maharashtra government had sent Gupta, who was then Maharashtra Principal Secretary (Special), on compulsory leave.

A huge controversy had erupted over Wadhawans Mahabaleshwar. Former Maharashtra chief minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis had then hit out at the Maha Vikas Aghadi government over the incident and sought an explanation from Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

“No lockdowns for mighty and rich in Maharashtra? One can spend holidays in Mahabaleshwar with official permission from police. It is not possible that a senior IPS officer would do such gross mistake knowing the consequences on his own. With whose order or blessings was this done? Mr CM and HM, you owe us an explanation,” Fadnavis said on social media platform Twitter.

Kapil Wadhawan, Dheeraj Wadhawan accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud case

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya strongly objected to Amitabh Gupta being appointed as Pune Police chief.

Notably, Director of Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL) promoters Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan are accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud case involving money laundering. The Wadhawans were held from Mahabaleshwar on April 26 by the Central Bureau of Investigation and were later arrested the ED.

The ED filed its charge sheet on July 15 against the Wadhawans, Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor, his wife Bindu Kapoor, daughters Roshni and Rekha, and their chartered accountant firm Dularesh K Jain and associate.
