India has highlighted the need for greater representation of the Global South, particularly in the permanent category in the United Nations Security Council. Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Sibi George stated this while delivering India’s national statement at the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) meeting on UN Security Council reforms at UN Headquarters on Tuesday. He also underlined the similarities between India’s approach to UN Security Council reforms and the African model.
In a social media post, the External Affairs Ministry said that Mr Sibi George also delivered India’s national statement at the General Debate of the 2026 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up at UN Headquarters. Secretary (West) underscored the need for a fair, inclusive and development-oriented global financial system to bridge the Four trillion dollar Sustainable Development Goals financing gap. He also highlighted that reforming International Financial Institutions, enhancing the voice of the Global South, and deploying digital public infrastructure are key to delivering on the Sevilla Commitment, which is a 2025 global agreement to scale up developing financing.
