From supplying oxygen to vaccines to ventilators, global community pour support to India for COVID-19 relief

“Over 40 countries have pledged support to India,” said India’s Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla while addressing a press briefing on ‘International Cooperation on COVID Pandemic’ today.

Acting on the ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, India has nursed more than 95 countries by delivering COVID-19 vaccines around the globe under its ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative. Last year too when the demand for life-saving hydroxychloroquine medicine arose around the world, India had taken up the task of delivering the drug to dozens of countries including the United States, Brazil, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Malaysia among others.

In line with the same initiative, as India is combating the second wave of the COVID-19 many leading countries have lent the hand of support and supplies of essentials COVID-19 medicines, ventilators to oxygen concentrators, and more.

The list of countries that have extended assistance to India includes the United States, Singapore, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, and many other nations. The European Union has also committed its support to replenish India’s stocks of oxygen and medicines like remdesivir.

Let’s take a look at the countries that have offered assistance so far: 

United States

The United States has agreed to send specific raw materials, which are used in the production Indian Covishield vaccine. The development has come in the aftermath when Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and American National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had a telephonic conversation earlier on Sunday.

Additionally, US will be supplying therapeutics, rapid diagnostic test kits, ventilators, oxygen generators, and deploy an expert team of health advisors from the Public Health Agency of US.

“Tomorrow & over the next couple of days, we’re expecting three special flights from the US. President Biden spoke to the PM offering extensive assistance. We have a cargo flight arriving tonight from UAE with ventilators & carrying Favipiravir medicines,” said Foreign Secretary of India Harsh V Shringla today.

On Twitter, US president, vice president, defence secretary,  surgeon general, deputy secretary of the state also affirmed their support for India.

“Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic, we are determined to help India in its time of need.”President Joe Biden tweeted on Monday.

Russia

Today morning, two Russian aircrafts carrying shipments of oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical supplies reached India.

“A longstanding and time-tested partner! Grateful for shipment of oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical supplies that arrived from Russia this morning in two aircrafts.” Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi tweeted 

Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday also asserted that Germany is preparing urgent support for India. 

Today, the first consignment of oxygen concentrators from Germany arrives in Delhi on ⁦Air India Flight AI120.

Furthermore, German armed forces have been pressed into action and they will be giving India oxygen generators. German top medical institute Robert Koch Institute (RKI) with Indian institutions are also working closely to monitor the situation. 

Meanwhile, the Armed Forces Medical Services of India will be importing 23 mobile oxygen generation plants from Germany. These plants will be deployed in AFMS hospitals to treat Covid-19 patients. 

United Kingdom

Uk has extended support to India by providing medical equipment like ventilators and oxygen concentrator devices. The first consignment of aid material arrived on Tuesday with 100 ventilators and 95 oxygen concentrators.

Early this morning, another shipment from the UK arrived in India containing 120 oxygen concentrators.

Further committing the support to India, Uk is also working to provide vital medical equipment, including hundreds of oxygen concentrators and ventilators.

In a released statement by the Indian high commission of London quoted Prime Minister Boris Johnson as, “We stand side by side with India as a friend and partner during what is a deeply concerning time in the fight against COVID-19.” 

Over 600 pieces of vital medical equipment are being sent to India to support the country in its fight against COVID-19, the statement added.

Singapore

On Saturday last week, Indian Air force (IAF) airlifted four cryogenic oxygen containers from Singapore. In total, India will be receiving 7,511 oxygen concentrators, 516 BiPAP machines of which 500 BiPAPs, 250 oxygen concentrators have already arrived in India. 

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia will be supplying  80 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen to India in cooperation with the Adani group and British multinational company Linde.

Japan

Under its grant assistance, Japan will be providing oxygen generators under a procurement process. On Monday, Prime Minister Modi also had a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister yoshihide Suga and extended gratitude for providing assistance to India in combating the pandemic.

Bangladesh

Neighboring Bangladesh has offered emergency medicines and equipment to India to combat the COVID pandemic. The essentials include approximately 10,000 vials of injectable anti-viral, oral anti-viral, 30,000 PPE kits, and several thousand zinc, calcium, vitamin C, and other necessary tablets.

Bhutan

Bhutan has also pitched its support for India by supplying liquid oxygen from a new plant being set up at the Samdrup Jongkhar district of the Himalayan nation. With a production capability of 40 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen per day, it will be exported to Assam using cryogenic tankers. The oxygen plant is a joint venture between M/S D Cryogenics and Meghalaya Oxygen Pvt. Ltd., an Assam-based Indian company.

Apart from this serveral other nations have also committed their support including Tawang, Hong Kong, Belgium, Romania, Luxembourg, Thailand and UAE among others.
