Commendation for Significant Achievement in CSR

The Ramco Cements Limited, Alathiyur works has been awarded “Commendation for Significant Achievement in CSR” by the Confederation of Indian Industries, in the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2020. Seventeen companies had participated for this category of award in Corporate Social Responsibility, of which nine were shortlisted for the honour of Excellence and Commendation.

The companies that participated along with Ramco Cements were Capgemini, NTPC, Tata Chemicals, DP World, Bharat Forge, Cairn Oil & Gas, Nayagara Energy, Sterlite Technologies, Bharat Aluminium, HDFC Ergo, Schneider Electric, Tetra Pak, United Breweries, THDC, JM Financial and Avaada Energy.

The Award was presented in a virtual event held on 23 December 2020, chaired by Mr.Anurag Singh Thakur, Honourable Minister of States for Finance and Corporate Affairs, in the presence of Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General of CII, Mr. Sanjiv Puri, Chairman and Managing Director of ITC Limited, and other dignitaries.

The Award is a recognition of the various efforts of Ramco Cements Alathiyur works as detailed below

The employees of the plant volunteer through a structured process and set-up called RSSL (Ramco Social Service League) which improves process efficiency and ensures consistency in employee volunteering.
The company establishes local committees and enters into an MOU with them for operation and maintenance of the CSR assets created for over 50,000 villagers. This ensures the long-term sustainability of these projects.

Under preventive health care, the organization has installed RO Water Units in four villages, namely, Thamaraipoondi, Pudhupalayam, Mullukkurichi and Kodukkur. Seventy individual SMART toilets have also been put up as part of the Community Total Sanitation Programme promoted in partnership with Gramalaya (NGO & having expertise in community sanitation) based in Tiruchirapalli. The maintenance of this facility is handed over to the village toilet committee formed to monitor open defecation.
RAMCO Cements also supports upgradation of equipment and infrastructure facilities in the local government run Primary Health Centre at Manakkudayan Panchayat.
In 2019-20, the company planted 42,500 saplings in the project area, desilted three ponds, and increased the water storage capacity from 32,900 cu.m to 55,300 cu.m. Systematic work to recharge ground water through de-siltation of water bodies, creating awareness on Rain Water Harvesting in the community and utilisation of wastewater for extensive plantations are being carried out extensively.
Seventy households of Irungalakurichi village have been provided individual dedicated smart toilets resulting in the village being declared as Open Defecation Free and recognized accordingly by the Government.
Drinking Water Project provides safe drinking water through RO units, leading to reduction of water-borne illnesses and improved health, resulting in increased school attendance of children from these villages.
