Weekend with Dr Jagadish Episode 3 – An Idea called Modi

An Idea called Modi

By Dr Jagadish J Hiremut: It is not often that life presents someone with an opportunity, a chance that mere mortals will not get. It is not often that one becomes a Chief Minister of a progressive state three times in arrow and tops it, by becoming the Prime Minister of our country. The one who got such an opportunity is a man blessed by Ma Bhavani herself. Yes, this week’s post is a tribute to the favourite person of my family and my inspiration for public service – the man I address as “bade bhaiyya”, Mr Narendra Modi for his 68th birthday.

Mai Narendra Damodardas Modi…….still haunts us right? Well most of us were happy to see an authentic person with true Hindu blood (unadulterated and rising from the bottom of pyramid to top), on the podium to be sworn as prime minister of India.

I always keep wondering what sets this man apart from other politicians of the day:

Conversing with people in my sphere of influence and beyond it occasionally, with people who are in no way connected to politics and sometimes to those, who are totally averse to even discuss politics; one thing was crystal clear: Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi is perceived as sincere person with high credibility and integrity across wide spectrum of people.

In almost all, one on one in camera discussion, I found that even moslems and christians consider him swell; although they deny any such moorings in public. In the rural hinterland of north Karnataka even this faux hostility of moslems to PM Narendra Modi has dissolved. Rural moslem women folk openly praise him for the steps he has taken, especially with regards to lighting and provision of cooking fuel. I found a few moslem women cussing and swearing at their men folk for their importune stance against Modi. Few had faced their share of Talaks in their households and did share the gory details with me.

Where does the defiance and hostility to Modi come from?

On careful observation you will notice that it is not the non-Indic minority who exclusively oppose PM Narendra Modi but it is a motely group of so called entitled Hindus who form the nidus of this group. By applying typological differentiation, I further divided this whole group opposing Narendra Modi group into 2 broad groups.

The first group shares the common characteristics of a herd. They are basically English educated mostly in church run (convent) schools or christian run institutions or from the infamous JNU. Uprooted from their ancestral and family legacies with colonised souls these people are easily influenced by the non-native, non-Indic alien ideologies of communism, islam and church. They have never tried to understand or appreciate their own civilizational legacy and oppose anything Hindu blindly.

Sometimes these people purposefully do things to antagonise Hindus like arranging beef fests. They speak fluent English or want to speak fluent English, claim they are torch bearers of liberalism, claim that Hindus, Hindu traditions, culture and festivals are patriarchal but stand in support of Burkha/veil, Polygamy, Nikah halala & Talak. Few in this group even promote anti national activity and hinder economic activity just because Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India. A few I interacted with; behave as if they are in a state of war with the state. Bade bhaiyya’s silence to their Machiavellian shenanigans infuriates them more. Most of them know they are wrong; and are on the path of Adharma but continue to be so either for money or for notoriety. That is the key feature differentiating this group from the more malignant second group. I call the above group as “the sepoys”.

The second group is well educated mostly intelligent, richly entitled and smaller in number. They have all the characters of sepoys, however; are more rabid. These people had run their fiefdoms as kings or queens and had access to the inner circle of power in the previous regimes. Be it conferring Padma awards (to themselves) or influencing key decisions like ministry allocation, they could accomplish it with consummate ease & masterly panache. This is the core group which gives direction; this group is formed by editors, newstraders, people who call themselves political observers & commentators, middlemen, power brokers, eminent historians (distorians), faux intellectuals, few eminent lawyers etc,. I call them “the rabids”, the key difference between sepoys and rabids is; whist sepoys can still appreciate they are wrong and are supporting adharma; no such conscience exists in rabids. There is an inherent flaw in their perception of right & wrong, the discerning activities of higher centers in the brain are lost or have been rendered ineffective.

Rabids are self-centred, selfish and work only for gains; nation is/was never important for them. They are the ones who plan for the unintelligent sepoys to execute. Their main enemy is Narendra Modi as he does not allow anyone to loot the nation unlike the previous regimes.

What the rabids or the sepoys do, hardly affects less than 1% of common man in India today, as they are mostly confined to miniscule part of metros or Lutyens Delhi circuit.

Common man on other hand appreciates the “tough love” acts of Narendra Modi Bhai. The simpletons instinctively understand that we need to work hard and struggle to achieve what we want as a nation. They understand Modi is making them sweat for a better country and are okay with it. In a revealing discussion I had with a villager in a remote village where I was surprised at his understanding; he told me “Sir, only if your hands get dirty you will be seeing the fruits of work aren’t it? If you only keep talking development of the country and are not contributing to it with your efforts, how will the country develop?”.

This “tough love” act has come to represent what I call as “An idea called Modi” which differentiates him from leaders of past and present. Whist they were interested in governing from the centre, use available resources for development or as they feel right, here is bade bhaiyya who wants each and every person in India to contribute for her development.

Modi is not afraid to tell people: Clean yourself and clean the country. Willing to take tough love decisions like removing 85% of circulating cash, putting immense constraints and forcing people to undergo change to adapt to newer methods of transactions; few demurred but accepted it eventually as they knew that Modi is doing it for the benefit of the nation. Forced GST implementation another tough love act which we know people will suffer initially but will help nation become more tax compliant and eventually the benefits will come back to them.

Even his non-intervention in fuel pricing policy allowing the market forces to dictate price, albeit troubling to most of us, is being perceived as another tough love act. Almost all developed countries in the world have very high fuel prices, be it Japan, Korea, Singapore, Germany, England or any developed nation, collect huge taxes through high fuel price. The taxes on fuel are used for welfare and nation building activity. We are seeing this now in India. Ports, roads, railways, airports all getting developed at a fast pace using the funds generated from the tough love acts of Modi. By comparing fuel costs in India to fuel costs in Pakistan, the rabids and sepoys have shown how little they understand about nation and development.

The fact that his “tough love” is present in equal force towards his own immediate family makes everyone I met and spoke to have a soft corner for them (Modi’s immediate family) and increases their love manifold for Modi. By relinquishing his immediate family for the greater good of the nation; today every person I come across considers Modi as part of his family and an elder who they are willing to listen. This is unprecedented in India and this is what I observe as the other dimension of “an idea called Modi”.

On a personal note: I was once a supporter of Congress and I have lot of friends even today in Congress, when I came back from abroad, I wanted Rahul Gandhi to become PM replacing Man Mohan Singh in 2009, in retrospect with all information I have at hand now, I thank Mahadeva that it did not come to such a pass. It did not take long for me to appreciate what was happening and change my allegiance from corrupt & looting party to a non-corrupt Narendra Damodardas Modi. An authentic and genuine person with a vision to develop India, bade Bhaiyya has not let me down and I will vote him again for his “tough love”.
