Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has called for a nationwide movement for the conservation of water. He participated in a programme on water conservation, held at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai today. In his address, he said every citizen should become a water warrior in saving every drop of water.
The Vice President said, the water crisis affects the public in many adverse ways and women and children are the worst affected by it. He referred to the projections that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas. He said such a situation should not be allowed to continue as it may jeopardize the future of humankind.
Mr Venkaiah Naidu urged the farmers to take a pledge to adopt micro-irrigation methods. He asked all the manufacturing units to commit themselves to save water and treat effluents. He also said, sustained measures have to be taken to prevent pollution of water bodies, contamination of groundwater and ensure proper treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater.
Mr Venkaiah Naidu said, both in urban and rural areas, rainwater harvesting must be made mandatory for all types of buildings. He suggested innovative methods like desalination technology, collecting dew and wastewater recycling to counter water shortage. The Vice President lauded the Central schemes like the Namami Gange Programme, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, Atal Bhujal Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
