Addressing the ‘European Union-India Aviation Summit’ in New Delhi on 20th April, union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that 25 Indian airports are using 100% green energy. The minister also said that by 2025, another 121 airports in the country will also achieve the target of zero carbon emissions. “We are encouraging our airports to use green energy by 2024 and achieve net zero by 2030. Twenty-five of our airports are already using 100 per cent green energy. Our target is to make another 121 airports carbon neutral by 2025,” said the minister, who could not attend the event physically due to Corona infection and addressed the two-day event through video conferencing.
Jyotiraditya Scindia also added that the contribution of the aviation industry in carbon emissions is being monitored minutely and that the ministry has taken a number of significant steps to reduce and offset carbon emissions from the aviation industry. “The emission contribution of the aviation industry has been under immense scrutiny. We have taken several measures to minimise the carbon footprint and mitigate emissions from the aviation industry,” said the minister adding that India and the European Union share a common goal of combating climate change.
The Aviation Minister also stated that India now has in place reformed regulatory mechanism as it seeks to promote aircraft manufacturing in the country. “We have reformed the regulatory environment to make it as conducive as possible. I urge industry players from the European Union to tap into these opportunities and become part of the fastest growing aviation industry in the world,” he said.
The summit focuses on EU-India air transport ties and the mutually shared challenges and opportunities of the two regions, which include post-Covid recovery of air space and traffic, shifting to sustainable aviation, increasing safety measures and developing unmanned aircraft systems, etc. The conference is being attended by top-level policy makers and officials from the European Union and India, industry players and other concerned stakeholders.
