Indian equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 settled on the red side of the market on Friday, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the repo rate unchanged at 4 per cent for the sixth time in a row and maintained a lenient policy stance. Selling pressure witnessed in banking and select FMCG stocks. Buying interest was seen in auto, metal and certain realty stocks. Nestle was top laggard among blue-chip stocks, down 1.96 per cent. SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Titan among other laggards. Bajaj Finserv top Sensex gainer, up 2.53 per cent. ONGC, Larsen, Bajaj Finance, HDFC and UltraTech Cement among other top performers.
Earlier in Asian Indices, South Korea’s Kospi fell by 0.23 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by 0.40 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite increased by 0.21 per cent.
Market Overview
The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 declined by 0.25 and 0.13 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at the 52,100 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 15,670 mark. The Sensex fell 132 points to trade at 52,100 and the Nifty50 declined by 20 points to trade at 15,670.
Nifty50 Index
In the 50-share pack of Nifty50, Grasim was the biggest gainer, increased by 3.05 per cent. Tata Motors, Bajaj Finserv, Coal India, Bajaj Finance, ONGC, and IOC were among other gainers.
On the other hand, Nestle was the worst performer in the pack, down by 2.09 per cent. SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, M&M and Hindalco were the other worst performers in the pack.
Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices
The Nifty Midcap-100 index surged 0.72 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index rose 0.37 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Indiabulls Hsg gained 14.24 per cent, PNB Housing Finance rose 10.00 per cent, Bharat Forge, Gujrat State Petro and LIC Housing Finance also surged, while CG Consumer, Quess Corp and RBL Bank declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, Spandana Sphoor gained 8.91 per cent. On the other hand, Infibeam Avenue fell 2.63 per cent, Birla Corporation, IRB Infra, Agis Logistics declined.
Sectoral Indices
In NSE sectoral indices, 10 out of 17 sectors surged. Nifty Metal was the top performer as it gained 1.35 per cent, NSE PSE rose 1.25 per cent, followed by Nifty Media increased by 1.02 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Pvt Bank, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumption declined.
