Amid escalating conflicts in Ukraine, 18 flights carrying Indians are coming to India today (March 4) informed Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs. Under Operation Ganga, the evacuation efforts are in full swing and more than 7400 Indians are expected to arrive in next two days and over 6200 Indians have already returned from Ukraine through special civilian flights.
In the meantime, as part of ongoing Operation Ganga, three more IAF C-17 aircraft returned to Hindan airbase late last night and early morning today carrying Ukraine conflict affected 630 Indian nationals, using airfields in Romania and Hungary, informed Indian Air Force.
Gen (Retd) VK Singh has also informed that some students who reached Warsaw and have their relatives and friends there, have decided to stay and they’re safe in Poland, adding that four flights from Rzeszow and one from Warsaw will be evacuating 800-900 students as they don’t have spaces to stay here.
Earlier, Ukraine Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, “Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Fire has already broken out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl!” Ukrainian government official said that the smoke is visible from Europe’s largest nuclear power station as Russia attacked city of Enerhodar. “Elevated levels of radiation were detected near the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which provides about 25% of Ukraine’s power generation.
International Atomic Energy Agency has also expressed concern over the development, saying- “IAEA is aware of reports of shelling at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and is in contact with Ukrainian authorities about situation.”
The round the clock control centres have been set up to assist in the evacuation of Indian nationals through the border crossing points with Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovak Republic.
