The central and Uttar Pradesh government are striving to transform the two leading cities of the state, Lucknow and Kanpur, into the key drivers of the state’s economic progress.
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway
The 63 km long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway to be built at Rs 4,700 crore connecting the two cities, will reduce the commute time to a mere 45 minutes, as opposed to the 2 hours 39-minute journey via the NH 27.The expressway will pass through 31 villages of Unnao and 11 villages of Lucknow.
In a paradigm shift, the government has given top priority to building of greenfield expressways and highways over the expansion of existing highways to accelerate high quality road development.The expressway will be connected to the proposed ring road in Kanpur.Along with these, one railway over-bridge will be constructed as well.
Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor – India is fast emerging as a major aerospace and Defence market and the Government announced Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC) which is an aspirational project that intends to reduce foreign dependency. The envisaged corridor not only targets the setting up of manufacturing hubs but also aims at generating employment opportunities to cater to the most populous state in the country.
The UPDIC is planned across 6 nodes namely – Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra Aligarh, Chitrakoot, which spreads across Central, East, West region of Uttar Pradesh and along the Golden Quadrilateral connecting Delhi – Kolkata supported by networks of expressways such as:Yamuna Expressway, Agra – Lucknow Expressway and Purvanchal Expressway etc.
Purvanchal Expresway
Another addition to the infrastructure and connectivity to Lucknow is the Purvanchal Expressway. This 8-lane expressway is currently under construction and will connect the historic towns of Ballia and Azamgarh with the state capital, Lucknow. The construction work on the expressway is being underway in full swing despite COVID-19 pandemic.
The eight-lane carriageway will help in decongesting the entire city and ensure smooth traffic movement .Once the phase is complete, traffic coming from Faizabad Road will be able to go towards Sultanpur road without entering Lucknow. The railway-over-bridge (RoB), flyovers and other structures will be completed within the scheduled time.
The foundation stone for the 340 km long expressway was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018 and will connect Lucknow with Ghazipur.The expressway will commence from Chandsarai in Lucknow and end at village Haideriya in Ghazipur district.
Once this Expressway is complete, Delhi will be connected via the Expressway, to several major towns and cities of the State of Uttar Pradesh, from Noida in the west, to Ghazipur in the east. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this expressway will transform Purvanchal and will boost tourism and employment opportunities.
