Former Pakistani diplomat and scholar Hussain Haqqani has said that the people of Pakistan should urge their government to offer a formal apology for all the atrocities committed in 1971. Speaking in an online function organised by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Brussels, Haqqani said that Bangabandhu is not only the greatest Bengali of all time, he is one of the greatest leaders from South Asia and a great leader of the world comparable to Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
He said Pakistan treated the then East Pakistan as the golden goose and never considered Bengalees as equals. Today, said Haqqani, Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing countries of the world.
Hussain Haqqani served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011. He is currently a senior fellow and director for South and Central Asia at Hudson Institute, US.
Joining the online discussion, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen said that though Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan sent a message at the last moment on the Independence Day of Bangladesh, it did not mention the apology for the genocide committed by its military against Bangladeshis in 1971. Dr. Momen said it was expected that Pakistan would apologise formally for the genocide committed by its military in 1971 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence.
