Over 100 killed, 3.5 million people affected as widespread floods continue to ravage Assam, Bihar

Amid Covid-19 pandemic, floods triggered by heavy rainfall have inundated several parts of Assam and Bihar. More than a hundred people have lost their lives while over 3.5 million have been affected as the widespread floods continue to ravage the two states.

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Friday with three more persons losing their lives in the deluge, taking the death toll to 96 in the state, said the State Disaster Management Authority. Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Tinsukia, among other districts have been the worst hit by the floods in the state affecting nearly 27.8 lakh people, it added.

On Friday, President Ram Nath Kovind spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over the flood situation and expressed solidarity with the affected people of the state. A total of 2,543 villages are reeling from the effects of the rising waters of the Brahmaputra, among its other tributaries, which have affected 1,22,573.16 hectares of crop.

“President Ram Nath Kovind took stock of the flood and overall situation of the state over phone. I am humbled by his statement that the entire nation is with the people of Assam and thank him for his deep concern, constant support and guidance,” Sonowal later said in a tweet.

As many 50,136 people have taken shelter in 496 relief camps in Assam.

Floods situation in Bihar

The floods continue to wreak havoc in Bihar as the state government has informed nearly 1 million have been affected in the state and 12,023 persons were residing in shelter homes. A total of 9,60,831 people affected due to floods in the state, the government said in a released.

The floods in Bihar claimed at least 10 lives till Friday and hit as many districts in the northern parts of the state, the state’s disaster management department said. It further stated that 22 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in the state to help in rescue and relief efforts.

In the meantime, help will be sought from the Indian Air Force (IAF) so that relief material could be dropped for people marooned in places, which have become inaccessible.
