The National Green Tribunal has issued notices to multiple agencies over pollution in the Yamuna River. The tribunal has sought responses from the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Uttar Pradesh government, and local authorities, including the Mathura Vrindavan Nagar Nigam and the Central and State Pollution Control Boards. The matter relates to the alleged discharge of untreated sewage and wastewater from Vrindavan and Kosi towns into the river.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava was hearing a plea highlighting non-compliance with its December 2021 directions. These directions had called for revamping sewage treatment systems, removing encroachments, and undertaking plantation drives to protect the river.
The petitioner told the tribunal that the water quality of the Yamuna in the area is unfit for bathing, drinking, or domestic use. Observing that considerable time has passed without compliance, the tribunal has issued notices to all respondents. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for 4th August this year.
