New Delhi World Book Fair: Promoting & inculcating the habit of book reading in India since 1972

The 29th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF) is being held from 6th to 9th March 2021. The theme of the first-ever Virtual Book Fair, organized by the National Book Trust (NBT) is the New Education Policy, launched by the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in July 2020.

Education is fundamental for achieving full human potential, developing an equitable and just society & promoting national development. Providing universal access to quality education is the key to India’s continued ascent & leadership on the global stage. It is this vision that the Director of NBT, India Yuvraj Malik resonates, with which the theme for this year was set.

Tracing the roots of one of India’s oldest book fairs:

The first New Delhi World Book Fair was held in 1972 (March 18 to April 4), inaugurated by the then President of India V.V. Giri. and attended by around 200 participants. The NDWBF has inspired since its inception many such book fairs in different parts of the country, the most prominent being the Kolkata book fair, which was started in March 1976.

Prof. Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman, NBT India said, “last year, the fair had attracted 14 lakh visitors, which reflects the popularity of the fair” across masses of varying age groups and interests.

The 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 5th to 13th January 2019. The theme of the fair was ‘Books for Readers with Special Needs’ and Sharjah was the ‘guest of honors’ country.

What’s in store at the first-ever Virtual NDWBF?

The global Covid-19 pandemic introduced a new normal to the world and made virtual the new reality of lockdown and social-distancing. The NDWBF is a coveted gathering for avid book readers, writers, critics, and illustrators of all age groups. It is held every year on a very large scale to promote book reading by providing interesting and illustrative books at economical costs.

This year, more than 160 stalls of publishers/ exhibitors in English and Indian languages like Bangla, Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Sindhi, Kannada, Marathi, and Urdu are participating in the first-ever virtual NDWBF.

Publishers from 15 plus countries including the US, UK, UAE, Spain, France, Italy, Iran, China, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, and Nepal are also participating in the fair

Publishers across 5 halls:

Hall 1: Foreign publishers
Hall 2: English language publishers
Hall 3: Indian language publishers
Hall 4: Children’s publishers
Hall 5: Featured Hall (For special books on NEP, Girl education, Pandemic, Award-winning books & books by Child authors)

E-events: Visitors will be able to participate in the discussions pertaining to the New Education Policy with eminent scholars and authors.

They will also be able to attend seminars, literary events, book releases, interaction with authors, panel discussions with embassies & foreign publishers, and cultural programs completely free of cost.

E-purchase of Books: The visitors can purchase a book of their choice at the virtual book-store by adding titles to the cart, followed by online payment, after which the books will be delivered to your doorsteps within a fixed period.

How to take part in the NDWBF?

Anyone can attend the book fair virtually. For which, one will have to log in using their name and email ID, they can browse through the series of titles depending on which hall they choose depending on their interest & preference on the official website of NBT at nbtindia.gov.in/ndwbf21.

Addressing a press conference, Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT India said, “NBT has stopped at nothing to make the fair accessible for not just Indian visitors, but also for those across the World. And, with 360 degrees immersive experience, it will be a memorable experience for the visitors”.
