Mumbai: Complaint letter seeks action against Jet crew

Mumbai: A day after the passengers of Jet Airways flight 9W 0697 suffered ear and nose bleeding after the plane lost cabin pressure, a man wrote a complaint letter to the Sahar police station, alleging the crew of the flight had neglected their duties and should be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The complainant, Asad Patel, has requested the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the crew under relevant sections amounting to attempt to murder of the 166 passengers onboard of Mumbai-Jaipur flight. The crew forgot to switch on the bleed switch to stabilise the cabin pressure which resulted in 30 passengers suffering nose and ear bleed and were rushed to various hospitals on Thursday.

The letter states considering the circumstances of dereliction of duty towards the 166 passengers, the Jet Airways crew should be booked under relevant sections of the IPC. The complainant also stated the crisis management system on the aircraft was not in place as the travellers on board had to face a near-death experience for no fault of theirs. Police said, they cannot file an FIR or complaint based on a complaint letter submitted by a third party or person, as the relevant authorities hold the power to demand a penal action against the crew of Jet Airways.

Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region) said, “No FIR will be registered. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Jet Airways or one of the passengers are the only parties who can file a complaint.” A DGCA official said, “The pilots and the crew of the flight have been de-rostered. The cockpit crew has been taken off-duty and an investigation has been initiated by Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).”
