Milestones Achieved by Indian Railways in FY 22-23




Indian Railways has set new records in various categories during the Financial Year 2022-23. The achievements include record freight loading, electrification, new line construction, and integration of technology for ensuring safety. The following are the major achievements of Indian Railways in FY 22-23:

Record Freight Loading and Revenue

Indian Railways has set a new record in freight loading during FY 22-23 by loading 1512 MT, an increase of 6.63% compared to the previous year’s loading of 1418 MT. The increase in freight loading has also resulted in a 27.75% increase in revenue, with IR generating Rs. 2.44 Lakh Crores compared to Rs.1.91 Lakh Crores in FY 2021-22. This achievement was possible due to the customer-centric approach, work of Business Development Units, and agile policy-making of Indian Railways.

Record Electrification

Indian Railways is rapidly progressing towards its mission to achieve 100% electrification and become the largest green railway network in the world. During FY 2022-23, Indian Railways achieved a record electrification of 6542 RKMs, an increase of 2.76% compared to the previous year’s electrification of 6366 RKMs.

New Line Construction

During FY 2022-23, Indian Railways achieved a new record in new line construction by constructing 5243 Kms compared to 2909 Kms in the previous year. The average daily track laying comes out to be 14.4 Kms per day. This achievement is also the highest ever commissioning.

Automatic Signalling

In order to increase line capacity to run more trains on existing high-density routes of Indian Railways, Automatic Block Signalling is a cost-effective solution. During FY 2022-23, Indian Railways upgraded 530 Kms with automatic signalling compared to 218 Kms in the previous year, registering an increase of 143.12%, the best figure achieved in automatic signalling in the history of IR.

Digitally Interlocked Stations (Electronic Interlocking)

During FY 2022-23, Indian Railways created a large number of Digitally Interlocked Stations from old lever frame to a computer-based operating system. Electronic Interlocking is being adopted on a large scale to derive benefits of digital technologies in train operation and to enhance safety. Indian Railways provided electronic interlocking in 538 stations compared to 421 stations in the previous year, registering an increase of 27.79%.

Flyovers/Underpass

To facilitate public crossing on roads, Indian Railways constructed 1065 Flyovers/Underpasses during FY 2022-23 compared to 994 Flyovers/Underpasses in the previous year, showing an increase of 7.14%.

FOB, LC Elimination, and Gati Shakti Freight Terminals

Indian Railways constructed 375 FOBs for passenger/pedestrian crossing during FY 2022-23 compared to 373 FOBs in the previous year. Safety at Level Crossing Gates has been a major area of concern. During FY 2022-23, Indian Railways eliminated 880 LC gates compared to 867 LC gates in the previous year. Indian Railways is also prioritizing development of Gatishakti Freight Terminals and constructed 30 freight terminals in FY 2022-23 compared to 21 in the previous year.

Lifts/Escalators

As part of the ‘Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan,’ Indian Railways is installing lifts and escalators at railway stations across the country to provide ease of movement for Divyangjans, aged,and children on railway platforms. During the financial year 2022-23, Indian Railways installed 215 lifts and 184 escalators, which is a significant increase from the 208 lifts and 182 escalators installed in the previous year.

In addition, Indian Railways has made all-out efforts to optimally utilize resources by mobilizing scrap materials and selling them through e-auctions. The scrap sale of Rs. 5736 crore was achieved during the financial year 2022-23 as compared to Rs. 5316 crore during the previous year, which is an increase of 7.90%.
