Japanese PM Kishida Fumio to pay an official visit to India

It seems like the roads in Delhi are continuously buzzing with diplomatic activity. After hosting a series of top-level ministerial visits from the partner nations—Australia, Germany, and the US—New Delhi is now all set to welcome another key ally, Japan, for a high-level bilateral visit.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday announced an official schedule of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s two-day visit to India, starting March 20 to 21. Notably, this will be his second visit to India after assuming the top office. The last time the Japanese Prime Minister visited India was in March 2022 for the India-Japan Economic Forum.

Elaborating on the details of the Japanese PM’s visit, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr. Kishida Fumio will pay an official visit to India on 20-21 March 2023. During the visit, he will hold talks with the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. Both sides will discuss bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.”

Notably, the Japanese PM’s visit came amidst the fact that both countries are chairing the Presidencies of key multilateral institutions (G20 and the G7). Pertinently, a dedicated, focused discussion on the same will also be held during the ministerial level meeting. They will also discuss their priorities for their respective Presidencies of the G7 and G20, the MEA added. Expectedly, during his visit, the Japanese PM will also extend an invitation to PM Modi for the G7 Hiroshima Summit, which will be held on May 19–21 in Japan.

In addition, a wide range of exchanges of views towards deepening the Japan-India Special Strategic Global Partnership and realising a free and open Indo-Pacific would also be held between both sides during the PM’s visit, the Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary addressing a press conference earlier added. Significantly, the visit is expected to bring another major milestone, leveraging the India-Japan Global Partnership to a qualitatively new level.

Further, as the diplomatic corridors in Delhi await the presence of PM Kishida Fumio, in other news, EAM Dr. S Jaishankar held a meeting with  Dr. Akihiko Tanaka, President, Japan International Cooperation Agency. Taking to Twitter, EAM said, “Conversation focused on JICA’s continued engagement with Indian infrastructure and connectivity.”

“Deepening cooperation between our two countries today requires greater investment in human resources and personnel exchanges. Confident JICA will take up this challenge,” he added.
