In a bid to intensify the resolution on climate change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered five decisions on Monday at the 26th international climate conference held in Scotland’s western lowlands – Glasgow. As a part of the five-point action plan, PM Modi made the boldest pledge at the conference as well as urged the developed nations to rightly deliver their promises on climate financing.
Apart from committing to a net-zero emissions target, which is said to be hard to achieve for developing nations; the Indian Prime Minister significantly increased the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), India’s previous climate targets for installed renewable energy capacity & non-fossil fuel power capacity at the convention. The targets set for installed renewable energy capacity, as promised by India in the Paris Agreement, have been enhanced from 400 GW to 500 GW to be achieved by the year 2030. In addition to this, the Prime Minister also announced that the share of non-fossil fuel energy in India’s total energy mix is now enhanced from 40% to 50% to be achieved by 2030.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “By 2030, India will bring its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW & fulfill 50% energy requirement through renewable energy & by 2070 it will achieve the target of net-zero.”
The power and energy sector are the biggest constituents of the infrastructure sector. With each passing day, India is getting closer to achieve the envisaged goal of creating a sustainable nation and advancing economic development, improving energy security and improving access to energy along with it. India’s push for green energy has borne results, as the country has crossed the milestone of 100 gigawatts (GW) in the total installed renewable energy capacity earlier this year. The green energy trajectory for the nation has been on an upswing given that India has a total power generation capacity of 383.73 GW.
Remarkable feat achieved by India in Energy Sector
As of 2021, India’s installed renewable energy capacity has increased by over two and a half times. It stands at more than 141 GW, including large Hydro, which contributes to about 37% of the country’s total capacity. On the other hand, the installed solar energy capacity, which stands at 41.09 GW, has increased by over 15 times. Some of the major highlights are:
