The council serves as the central platform for fostering debate and creative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.

India handed over contribution of US$ 200,000 to support critical areas of UNITAD’s investigations
In another news, India earlier on April 12, handed over the contribution of US$ 200,000 to UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes by Da’esh/ ISIL (UNITAD).

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador T S Tirumurti handed over the contribution of US$ 200,000 during a meeting held at Permanent Mission of India to United Nations.

According to the statement by the India’s Mission at New York, the contribution will be used to support the two areas of UNITAD’s investigations, i.e., Development and use of chemical and biological weapons by ISIL and ISIL crimes against cultural heritage in Iraq.

UNITAD Special Adviser and Head of the Investigative Team, Christian Ritscher said, “ India’s financial contribution to UNITAD is vital in enhancing the pursuit of justice for some of ISIL’s most horrendous crimes. Its use of chemical and biological weapons continues to cause immense suffering for victims targeted by these weapons, and the group’s destruction of cultural heritage was an attempt to erase Iraq’s rich cultural diversity. With India’s support, UNITAD will continue to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
