India Boosting its Drone Industry to usher in growth opportunities & spur innovation

Drone development and adoption in India have advanced at a breakneck speed. Connectivity, battery technology, computer power, artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and many more areas have made significant progress.

The increasing use of commercial drones in various applications such as the agricultural sector, energy and utility sector, public safety sector, market by infrastructure sector, media and entertainment sector, and insurance sector is the major driving factor for the global commercial drones market’s growth. Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government’s role has changed under PM Modi’s leadership, and it is now acting as a facilitator rather than a regulator, looking at a new approach to evidence-based policymaking for drones.

The Union Minister speaking at a FICCI-organized session on Drones for Public Good – Mass Awareness Program, said that ”Technology promotion is critical, and that drone technology will bring those living on the margins to the centre of progress. Drones play a critical role in bringing people from all over the country together,” he added.

Making India a drone technology hub:

The Indian government has recently liberalized drone rules allowing Indian entrepreneurs to compete on a worldwide scale in the development and use of drone technology. The Ministry of Civil Aviation liberalized drone laws to encourage Indians to develop cutting-edge products in the field, with the goal of making India a drone technology hub in the future years.

PLI scheme for drones:

A production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme has been implemented in India to aid the expansion of drone technology, which is still at the infancy level in the country. According to the Government, the PLI will invest a total of 120 crores over three years.

How drones can Benefit India?

Drones used to enforce SVAMITVA Scheme:

The SVAMITVA Scheme (Survey of villages and mapping with improvised technology in village areas) aims to provide rural Indians with the documents they need for their properties. The reformative stage of mapping land parcels using drone technology to establish ownership of the property in rural areas began in 2020 and is projected to last until 2025. This is gradually changing, with other industries attempting to leverage the power of drones as well.

Drones in agriculture:

Farmers can use drones precisely to identify crop biomass, plant height, weed presence, and water saturation on specific field areas. Drones are often regarded as unrivaled allies in the fight against insects, the invasion could be avoided by spraying insecticide on dangerous areas with drone monitoring.

Vaccines through drones:

Drones will be helpful in delivering vaccinations to India’s hard-to-reach areas, leading to an increase in the immunization push, said the Union Minister. “By using vaccines and mapping and developing the demand structure for drone technology in India, the government is already operating as an anchor customer,” he further added.

For the first time in South Asia, a “Make in India” drone was utilized to transfer COVID vaccination from Bishnupur district hospital to Loktak lake, Karang island in Manipur for administration at the PHC over an airborne distance of 15 km in 12-15 minutes.
