Are you a homechef selling food and bakery products without a license? If yes, you might have to pay a huge fine and even go to jail. If reports are to be believed, according to a new release, homechefs who have not registered and got a license by the State Food Safety Department, might have to pay a fine of Rs. 5 lakh and face imprisonment for up to 6 months.

This has been recently announced by the State Food Safety Department as per the directions of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

If reports are to be believed, since March 2020, only 2300 registrations have taken place. However, there are still many units operating without a license or registration. Many do not know about the law.
For those, who don’t know, it is mandatory to have a license for sales above Rs 12 lakh, and for below that, registration is necessary.

Registration can be done through the Akshaya Kendra on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India site and the procedure for the same is duly mentioned. For registration, you need to upload a photo ID and photo. The idea is to make manufacturers responsible for ensuring the quality of the water and materials used in making the food.

In case you don’t have the license or registration, depending upon the scale you are operating and any report is filed against you, the food safety officials in the area concerned will inspect and fine. If he fails to obtain a license or registration, it carries a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh and imprisonment for up to 6 months, depending on the nature of the offense. And, a penalty of Rs 3 lakh for sale without label and penalty of Rs. 5 lakhs for selling without quality tags license registration for homemade cakes will be imposed.
