Heavy rains, landslides wreak havoc in Meghalaya

In Meghalaya, incessant rainfall continues to wreak havoc causing flooding and landslides in several parts of the state leading to loss of lives.

In South Garo Hills district, three people were reported dead in flash floods in Baghmara and one died due to landslides in Siju while some bridges have been washed away.

NH-62 has been disrupted by landslides and flash floods caused water logging in different parts of the district. Landslides have been reported in different parts of the district.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in a tweet offered his condolences and informed that ex-gratia of four lakh rupees will be released to the next of kin of the deceased.

Yesterday, four minors were killed in a landslide that occurred at Nongsoung Laitlarem village under Mawphlang Community and Rural Development Block in East Khasi Hills district. Meanwhile, a woman lost her life at Jashiar village in South West Khasi Hills district when mud and debris from a landslide washed her away along with the house.

The unrelenting downpour caused massive landslides on NH-6 blocking the arterial highway. Hundreds of passengers have been stranded on the highway.

The District Administration of East Jaintia Hills district has been providing food, water and other necessities to stranded passengers.

Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms wreaked havoc in several parts of South West Khasi Hills district causing landslides resulting in flash floods in many parts of the district.

As per Indian Meteorological Department, the state will be receiving heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for the next five days. Citing the IMD warnings, the State Education Department issued a notification that all schools will remain closed till 20th of June.
