Hathras gang-rape case: Postmortem report shows attempted strangulation, fractured neck

The autopsy report of the 19-year-old Hathras gang-rape victim showed that she suffered a fracture in the neck after repeated strangulation by the accused. The girl died in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday morning. She was allegedly gang-raped and brutalised on September 14 by four men in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

The postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors at Safdarjung Hospital in the presence of police.

The autopsy report mentions about “injury to the cervical spine produced by indirect trauma and its resultant sequelae”, said a report in News8 online.

Mentioning a ligature mark over the neck, the report further said, “the ligature mark over the neck is consistent with attempted strangulation but did not contribute to death in this case.”

The postmortem report, signed by three doctors, also said “fracture of C6 cervical vertebra was present with extravasations of blood along the fracture line.”

Hathras Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir said the accused involved in the crime will now face murder charges under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Initially, the victim was admitted to AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital but later referred to Safdarjung Hospital after her condition deteriorated. She breathed her last on Tuesday morning.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister to probe the case, met the deceased girl’s family members and carried out further probe in the case.

The body of the 19-year-old girl was forcefully cremated on Wednesday by Uttar Pradesh police. The family alleged the cops did not consult them before the cremation.
