Govt plans to boost NCC strength to 20 lakh, expand role in national development and security

Government is planning to increase the National Cadet Corps’ (NCC) strength from 17 to 20 lakhs and expand its role in various programs to contribute to both national development and national security. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said this while laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, on the occasion of 78th National Cadet Corps (NCC) Day. Pointing towards country’s young population, with a median age of 28 years, Mr Singh said that this demographic advantage is a major force driving country’s progress. He also said that the NCC stands as a strong example of the nation’s youth power and potential.

The National Cadet Corps is set to celebrate its 78th Raising Day tomorrow, with commemorative events planned across the country. Director General of NCC, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats said that NCC has a presence in over 700 districts across India, representing 90 percent of all districts, and that 40 percent of its cadets are female. Recalling the history of NCC, Mr Vats said that it was established in 1948, and started functioning with around 20,000 cadets only. He added that the strength has grown multifold now. He also noted the contribution of NCC cadets who have been involved in community development and humanitarian relief. He emphasized the importance of modern technology, including cyber awareness and counter-drone measures to improve the training of cadets.
