Google’s first generation Pixel smartphones will get their last update in December

Google recently released November security patch for Android smartphones. The update brought the critical camera and display improvements to the newly launched Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones. The update also brought a host of new improvements for older Pixel smartphones which includes improvements for Google Assistant Hotword and for speaker audio quality among other things. However, one Pixel smartphone that missed the November security update is the first generation Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones.

This wasn’t surprising at all as Google in its support page mentions that the company would provide Android version updates for at least 3 years from when the Pixel smartphone first became available on the Google Store. Google launched the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones back in 2016, which means their three year lease to life (or Android security updates in this case) expires this year.

In addition to that, the Mountain View California based company also detailed the time till which it will provide support for all its Pixel smartphones. And guess when Google stops guranteeing security updates onto its Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones? October 2019.

Similarly, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will stop getting security updates after October 2020, while Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will stop getting security updates after October 2021. Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL owners have nothing to worry about till May 2022 while Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL users can keep their worries aside till October 2022.

Coming back to original Pixel and Pixel smartphones, Google as I mentioned before has stopped providing software support to them. However, in a statement to The Verge, the company confirmed that the first generation Pixel phones will recieve their one last update in December 2019 that will “encapsulate a variety of updates” from the November and December for other Pixels smartphones. After December 2019 Google will stop providing any software or security update for the original Pixel phones or in other words it’s time to get yourself a new phone!
