With almost everyone staying at home thanks to the pandemic, apps across the Play Store and the App Store have seen unprecedented boosts in the number of downloads. Especially those apps that are related to gaming or entertainment. Google’s app dedicated to movies and series, Google Play Movies, is the latest addition to the list of apps that’ve become very popular over the lockdown. The content streaming platform from Google has crossed 5 billion downloads.
Google Play Movies became extremely popular and peaked in the middle of May, according to the data on AppBrain. It seems like people picked streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and others, before exhausting content there and then looking out for other options like Google Play movies for more entertainment.
There is no data available to show what content was viewed and rented/bought on the platform though.
Google Play Movies lets you buy or rent new movies and shows before they are launched on DVD or are streamed on another platform. Anything you buy or rent on Google Play Movies can be downloaded and watched even when you are not online. Rented content will obviously be removed from your collection once time is up. You can watch this content on your phone or your tablet or on your TV via Chromecast.
