Former Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey on Sunday joined Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), a month before the Assembly elections in the state.
Pandey, who took voluntary retirement earlier this week, had on Saturday met Chief Minister at his residence in Patna, triggering speculation that he might join the Janata Dal (United) in the run-up to the elections, scheduled to be held in October-November.
However, the 1987 batch IPS officer remained tight-lipped on his political plans and said that he is yet to decide whether to contest the forthcoming Bihar polls or not.
After meeting the CM, Pandey had said, “I came here to meet CM Nitish Kumar and to thank him as he gave me absolute freedom to serve my duties as DGP.”
When asked whether he intends to take a political plunge ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, the former DGP Bihar said, “I have yet not taken any decision on contesting polls.”
Pandey stepped down as Bihar DGP
Pandey’s request for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) was approved by Bihar Governor Phagu Chauhan on Tuesday. Since then, speculations were rife about him joining politics.
The former DGP had hogged the limelight recently after he said that actress Rhea Chakraborty had no ‘aukaat’ (stature) to comment on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s decision to recommend a CBI probe in the case.
His decision to step down as Bihar police chief has sparked a political slugfest with the Congress party accusing the BJP of using Pandey to defame Maharashtra, and alleging that he was now being “rewarded”.
“Bihar DGP who pushed for the CBI probe in the death case is being made a candidate for upcoming elections by the ruling party in the state. We are hearing NCB officials probing drug issue are very close to BJP and PM Modi,” Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said.
However, the former DGP denied the charges and said that his retirement has nothing to do with the Sushant Singh Rajput case.
