Drugs probe has nothing to do with Sushant Singh Rajput death case: NCB to HC during Rhea’s bail plea hearing

Rhea Chakraborty

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has opposed the bail application of Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik in the Bombay High Court after the two were arrested in a drugs case related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput on June 14.

The agency in its affidavit to the HC on Monday submitted that the siblings were “active members of a drug syndicate that was connected with high society personalities and drug suppliers”. It also said that they “abetted and financed” drug transactions.

During the hearing of Rhea’s bail application, ASG Anil Singh, appearing for the NCB, said, “All throughout arguments, applicants state that this is connected to Sushant Singh Rajput death case but this investigation has nothing to do with it.”

“I want to point out that this a drug syndicate and that they are all interlinked. All persons arrested till now, are connected with each other and it is a syndicate. There were regular links and purchasing,” he added.

Singh further said that Rajput may have been one of the consumers but the entire transaction and deal is not restricted to him.

Rhea has been lodged in the Byculla jail after the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested her for procuring drugs through Showik and supplying them to Sushant. They have been booked by the NCB under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The probe into drugs angle of the Rajput death case led the bureau to the discovery of several “linkages” or drug supply networks, an NCB official said. The NCB is probing the drugs case related to Sushant’s death as well as an alleged nexus between Bollywood and drug peddlers.

Showik had accepted during his interrogation that he used to procure weed and bud through drugs peddlers and pass them to his sister Rhea who gave it to Sushant. Sushant’s manager Samuel Miranda and cook Dipesh Sawant used to collect the contraband and make ‘joints’ (marijuana cigarettes) for the deceased actor.

On Thursday, the counsel for Rhea and Showik had told the Bombay High Court that the NCB had no jurisdiction to initiate the inquiry. Satish Maneshinde told the HC that the drugs case should have been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the NCB. He went on to say that while hearing the pleas seeking a CBI probe into the death of Sushant, the Supreme Court had ruled that all cases related to the actor’s death would be investigated by the CBI.

The NCB on Monday refuted the claims by Maneshinde that the agency has no jurisdiction in the drugs case and filed a response in the high court.
