Cyclonic storm ‘Burevi’ expected to cross shores again in southern Tamil Nadu

The cyclonic storm ‘Burevi’ over the south west Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the coast near Trincomalee in Sri Lanka this evening or tonight. The latest weather bulletin by the MET Department says it is expected to cross the shores again in southern Tamil Nadu between Kanyakumatri and Pamban by early in the morning on the 4th December.

The weather system is currently found moving north westwards at a speed of 12 km an hour. It lies centred at about 300 km east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, 530 km from Pamban near Rameswaram and 700 km east of Kanyakumari.

Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai districts are expected to get heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely very heavy rainfall at isolated places from today and tomorrow.

Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea during this period. AIR correspondent reports that, senior officials have been delegated to the eight southern districts that are expected to bear the impact of the cyclone, to effectively coordinate rescue and relief efforts.

The National Disaster Response Force NDRF has deployed two teams each to Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Madurai and three teams to Tirunelveli to help the civilian administration whenever required. Relief camps have been established by the district administrations concerned to accommodate people living in vulnerable areas.

The state Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy reviewed the situation with the district collectors yesterday through video conferencing. He asked the public in the susceptible districts not to go out in the open immediately before, during and after the cyclone’s landfall.

Flight operations at Thoothukudi airport have been put on hold. In Kanyakumari, boating to the Vivekananda Rock and Tiruvalluvar statue has been suspended and the tourists have been asked not to go near the shores as the sea remains very rough.
