Cyclone Amphan updates: Death toll in West Bengal reaches 77

Cyclone Amphan, which hit India’s eastern coast yesterday with winds gusting up to 185 kmph has affected 4.5 million people across 1,500 villages of Odisha.

As per news agency PTI, 77 people lost their lives in West Bengal due to the impact of the cyclonic storm. Today, Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi will be joined by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to conduct aerial surveys of the areas that have suffered the wrath of the cyclone.

Amphan is the most powerful cyclone to strike eastern India and Bangladesh in over a decade. Yesterday, NDRF Chief SN Pradhan during a press briefing mentioned that the situation in the state of Odisha is under control. Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had conducted an aerial survey of Odisha’s coastal and other adjoining district that have been affected.
