Covid-19 surge continues in Kerala, reports 2479 new cases on Friday

Thiruvananthapuram: After a slight drop in the single-day Covid cases in Kerala for the past days, on Friday it again crossed the 2000 mark and reported 2479 fresh cases. Out of the new cases 2255 people contracted the disease through contcat, informed a press statement from the office of Health Minister K K Shailaja.

Out of the new cases, the infection source of 149 is unknown. Kerala also reported 11 deaths and 2,716 recoveries on Friday..

The district-wise statistics of positive cases are: Thiruvananthapuram – 477 (463 through contact), Kollam – 241 (45 through contact), Pathanamthitta– 141 (99 through contact), Alappuzha – 106 (91 contact cases), Kottayam – 178 (177), Idukki – 29 (22), Ernakulam – 274 (267), Thrissur – 204 (140), Palakkad – 42 (36), Malappuram – 178 (169), Kozhikode – 167 (155), Wayanad – 84 (68), Kannur – 115 (102) and Kasaragod – 236 (225).

Among the new COVID cases reported on Friday, 59 persons had returned from abroad while 71 returned from other states. 

A total of 34 health workers were confirmed with COVID-19 on Friday. Among them, 10 are from Thiruvananthapuram, 8 from Kannur, 5 each from Pathanamth and Alappuzha, 4 from Ernakulam and 1 each Kollam and Thrissur districts.

Moreover, 60 persons in Thrissur AR Camp also tested positive for Covid-19.

11 deaths were also confirmed of COVID-19 in the state taking the death toll to 326. The deceased were identified as Thrissur Wadakkancherry native Raphel (78), Malappuram Olavattoor native Amina (95), Malappuram Kadambad native Muhammad (73), Kasaragod Manjeswaram native Abdul Rahman (60), Kannur Alakkode native Santhoshkumar (45), Thiruvananthapuram Amaravila native Ravidas (69), Kollam Kallamthazham native Bushra beevi (61), Thiruvananthapura Vizhinjam native Shabariyar (65), Thiruvananthapuram Venjaramoodu native Sulaja (56) and Thrissur Ponganamkad native Shibin (39) who died on August 30 were confirmed as Covid deaths by NIV Alappuzha.

Meanwhile, 2,716 recoveries were also reported on Friday. The district-wise statistics of negative cases are: Thiruvananthapuram – 426, Kollam – 114, Pathanamthitta – 105, Alappuzha – 438, Kottayam – 117, Idukki – 26, Ernakulam – 185, Thrissur – 140, Palakkad – 93, Malappuram – 627, Kozhikode – 272, Wayanad – 28, Kannur – 73 and Kasaragod – 72.

There are 21,268 active coronavirus cases in Kerala at present. 60,448 have recovered. As many as 1,97,973 are under observation. Among them, 1,80,743 are in home/institutional quarantine while 17,194 are in hospitals. 1,750 were admitted to hospitals on Friday.

36,310 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 17,92,330 samples were sent for testing in different categories. 1,81,683 samples were collected from priority groups as part of sentinel surveillance.

16 new COVID hotspots were identified in Kerala on Friday while 28 areas were removed from the list. There are currently 557 hotspots in the state.
