Biting cold wave continue to sweep North India; MeT department issues red warning for region

North India continues to shiver as there is no let-up in intense cold wave sweeping the region. Met Department has issued a red-coded warning for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar today.

Weathermen said, cold wave is not expected to relent until the new year. Dense fog in the region affected air, rail and road traffic. Authorities were forced to divert four flights from Delhi Airport to other destinations. A railway official said, 24 trains were delayed by 2 to 5 hours due to poor visibility.

National capital recorded its coldest day of the season at 2.4 degree celsius yesterday. Minimum temperature at many places in Haryana and Punjab were 5 to 7 notches below normal. Hisar was the coldest place in the two states at 0.2 degree celsius. Several places in Uttar Pradesh shivered as mercury fell below 2 degree celsius. Muzaffarnagar was the coldest place in the state with 1.7 degree celsius.

In Bihar severe cold wave has affected normal life. Met department has issued an for intense cold during the next 48 hours. Gaya was the coldest place in the state at 3.4 degree celsius.

AIR correspondent reports that 16 peole have been died due to bitting cold in several parts of the state including Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Madhubani and Sitamarhi during last 24 hours. Rail and road traffic have been disrupted due to intense fog.Over two dozen trains have been cancelled.

Most of the trains passing through Patna is running from six to ten hours late.

Rail passengers are suffering a lot at different stations.

Air services from Patna airport  have been disrupted and several flights for Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai have been cancelled.  

In Jammu and Kashmir, water supply lines and parts of Dal Lake froze in Srinagar. The city recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 5.8 degree celsius. Met Department has forcast rain and snowfall in Kashmir on new year eve.

Many places in Himachal Pradesh including Kufri, Manali and Solan, recorded temperatures below freezing points. Hills are likely to receive snowfall between December 31 and January 2.

In Rajasthan, Fatehpur in Sikar district recorded the lowest temperature in the state at minus 4 degree celsius. Sikar recorded a minimum of minus 1 degree celsius.  

In Madhya Pradesh, intense cold wave coupled with dense fog have affected normal life across the state. AIR correspondent reports that Pachmadhi of Hoshangabad district remained the coldest place of the state where minimum temperature recorded one point two degree Celsius.

Tikamgadh and Umariya also recorded temperature below two degree Celsius.

Mercury has dropped 5 degrees or below in twenty-five districts of the state.

Road and rail traffic has been badly affected at many places due to dense fog.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath also had to postpone his visit yesterday due to dense fog in Gwalior-Chambal division.

Met department also forecast of dense fog and cold waves today in many areas including Gwalior, Sagar, Rewa, Bhopal and Chambal divisions.
