Bihar: Rift between RJD and JD(U) widens following statement on dynastic politics by CM Nitish Kumar

In Bihar, the rift between two major constituents of Grand Alliance RJD and JD(U) has widened following a statement on dynastic politics by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Several other issues like delay in seat sharing for upcoming Lok Sabha elections among INDIA alliance, scathing attack of Lalu Prasad’s daughter on Chief Minister and lack of coordination among constituents in the state government also added fuel to ongoing friction.

The RJD has given an ultimatum to Nitish Kumar to clear his stand by today on the ongoing political tussle.

Three parties BJP, JD(U), and RJD have convened meetings of its MLAs in Patna tomorrow.

In the fast-changing political scenario, JD(U) President Nitish Kumar held discussions at his residence in Patna with the party’s senior leaders and some MLAs. On the same pattern, continuous consultations are also going on in RJD. The Chief of RJD, Lalu Prasad has held several rounds of meetings with its senior leaders and MLA since yesterday in Patna.

BJP is also closely watching the situation as the party’s high command held a meeting with its state party president Samrat Choudhary and senior state leaders last night in New Delhi. BJP President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah took the feedback from state party leaders. Although the party has not disclosed the agenda of the meeting.

In August 2022, JD(U) President Nitish Kumar had suddenly snapped ties with the BJP forming a new government with the help of RJD, Congress and Left Parties.

In the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly, RJD is the largest party with 79 MLAs while JD(U) has a strength of 45 members. Congress has 19 and Left Parties which are supporting the Grand Alliance government have 16 members. One Independent is also supporting the Nitish Government.

The Nitish Kumar-led government has the support of 160 members of the Lower House. On the other hand, BJP has 78 MLAs and its new alliance partner Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) led by Jitan Ram Manjhi has 4 MLAs. One MLA of AIMIM is also in opposition. For the formation of government, the required number of MLAs is 122.
