At least six killed in anti-government protests in Myanmar

In one of the bloodiest crackdowns against protestors in Myanmar, at least six people were killed in various towns and regions of the country on Sunday. Police fired at protestors in Yangon killing one person.

In the southern city of Dawei, three protestors were killed and several injured when police opened fire to break the protest. In the second largest city of the country Mandalay also two people have been killed. Another lady died of suspected heart attack after police cracked down on protesting teachers in Yangon with stun grenades,  reports Reuters.

There are also unconfirmed reports of two protestors being killed and several injured in Bago. With six deaths on Sunday, the number of people killed in the Myanmar protests has gone up to 9.

The military run MRTV reported that more than 470 people had been arrested on Saturday after the police launched a nationwide crackdown against protestors in Myanmar. Protests took place in several towns and regions of Myanmar including the Shan State, capital city of Kachin state Myitkyina, Bago, Yangon and Mandalay among others even as the military government stepped up use of force against the protestors.

In a series of mounting international pressure on the military government, the World Bank announced that it has temporarily put a hold on disbursements on its operations in Myanmar.
