The novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 which causes the COVID-19 disease has had an infamous image due to the many mutations that have been reported, since it was first found in Wuhan, China, in December last year. According to recent reports, Indonesia has now reported a novel coronavirus strain that is potentially more infectious than the others.

The Jakarta-based Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology in a press release informed, the new strain of coronavirus, that was also recently reported from Malaysia was detected in eight of the 22 whole-genome sequences reported in Indonesia. The institute confirmed that this meant that nearly 40 per cent genomes reported in Indonesia were the D614G strain.

“If we analyze more samples, we might come up with clearer information,” said Eijkman Institute chairman Amin Soebandrio.

“We will keep conducting the whole genome sequencing process to understand the characteristics of the mutation,” Amin said. “These sequences are important epidemiological data to trace the virus’ mobility.”

Indonesia has recently seen a spike in both the cases of COVID-19, and deaths due to the disease. Experts say that the community outbreak in the country is out of control.

What we know about D614 coronavirus mutation so far

D614G is one of the mutations of the novel coronavirus, dubbed as SARS-CoV-2. The coronavirus is made up of spike proteins. According to researchers, D614G is also present in those spikes itself. This mutation changes amino acid at the position 614, from D – aspartic acid, to G – glycine. Hence, it is named D614G. While the mutation has been recently detected in areas like Malaysia and Indonesia, it has been around since almost the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in China.

According to research published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, the D614G mutation was first observed in late January in China.

Researchers have so far found considerable evidence that supports that finding that this mutation may be highly infections, almost 10 times as those found before. However, as far as vaccine efficacy is concerned, researchers are positive that the mutation will not adversely affect it. Also, given that this is the most common strand of SARS-CoV-2, now found all around the world, the need for more than one effective vaccine may also not arise.
