Indian private defense giant Godrej & Boyce (Godrej Aerospace) delivers landmark 200th set of Brahmos airframe assemblies to BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) for use in its missile systems.
This will further enhance not only India’s national security through self-reliance, is not merely an achievement in the production and development of the most advanced missiles, but is a land mark moment for the vision of the Prime Minister AatmaNirbhar Bharat of making India a self-reliant nation. Each airframe of the BrahMos missile consists of 138 complicated subassemblies that are manufactured from more than 1500 parts.
The importance of this event lies in the fact that the indigenous manufacturing of defence equipments brings down costs and enhances the know-how about critical technologies while ensuring reliability of spare parts.
Godrej Aerospace had handed over the first of the airframes for the air-launched version of the prestigious BrahMos missile systems to Defense Research Development Laboratories (DRDL) on 31st August 2018. Godrej got the orders for 100 sets of airframes for the air-launched version of the missile in December 2017 from the DRDL. Then the indigenously manufactured assembly unit was taken to qualification tests by the DRDL. It has been a long success story in a short span of time.
Besides the main airframe, Godrej Aerospace supply control surfaces and nose caps for BrahMos.
BrahMos is a stealth universal supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from ships, submarines, aircraft, and land-based platforms. It can be used for a precision strike to destroy targets on land and sea. While the initial Brahmos was based on Russian Yakhont/P-800, over the years further upgrades and indianization of the missile has made it far superior in terms of performance and reliability than the Yakhont. While China and South Korea have developed their own Yakhont-based versions, the Brahmos Block-3 remains the most advanced of all the yakhont variants in the world.
Besides the Godrej & Boyce, BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd, Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), and Missile Systems Quality Assurance Agency (MSQAA), the other major contributors of this project include NPCIL & BARC, who gave them lot of encouragement. While the BARC/NOCIL contributed the Theory part, the L&T/ Godrej looked after the Practical-Design knowledge part.
This also gives an idea not only about the required eco-system to build sophisticated defence equipments, but also underlines the importance of knowledge, the critical infrastructure and the peremptoriness of collective efforts.
