International Happiness Day 2021: Happiness For All, Forever

Who doesn’t want to be happy? But the question remains how can someone be happy, especially during such a scary time?

The Covid-19 induced lockdown might not have done anything good to the world but it has somehow taught us all to be a little bit cautious about our mental health.

When the world came to a standstill, and people got time to think and feel the emotions they had long buried, words like anxiety, depression, panic became habitual.

Now, more than ever, we need awareness and education about the meaning and importance of happiness. To celebrate our emotions and normalize the concept of not being okay, and yet acceptable, we have many dedicated days, policies and initiatives across the globe. On these similar lines, on 20th March every year, a special day is dedicated to celebrating happiness.

What is the day of happiness?

The International Day of Happiness is a United Nations designated day “to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.”

As per the World Happiness Report that was published by the UN, fourth time in a row, Finland was declared as the happiest country in the world. Followed by Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

How did this day come into existence?

-In 2006, the International Day of Happiness was founded by the CEO of the United Nations New World Order project, Jayme Illien.

-The United Nations General Assembly, in a resolution, on 12 July 2012, declared 20 March as the International Day of Happiness.

-This day has been celebrated since 2013 globally.

-The Sustainable Development Goals is closely linked with wellbeing and happiness and therefore, this day is celebrated with an aim to promote the idea of happiness as a fundamental human goal.
