Vice President Venkaiah Naidu says police must focus on prevention of crime. He said the best preventive measure is to create a law-abiding society, adding that respect for law must become our culture and way of life. The Vice President was speaking after confering the President Colours to Gujarat Police at Karai Police Academy in Gandhi Nagar today. Expressing concern over the low conviction rate in the country, Mr Naidu said there is an urgent need to augment investigation and intelligence gathering capabilities of police departments.
Mr Naidu also said that effective policing is important to deal with growing violence, extremism, religious fundamentalism, terrorism and threats in the form of cyber-attacks and bank frauds. He said a high level of professionalism, dedication to the duty and sensitivity to the expectations of the people must be developed.
The Vice President added that in this era of Information Communication Technology, ICT, it is imperative that police improves its communication network. Our correspondent reports that Gujarat becomes the seventh state to receive President Colours – an emblem which all police officers of the state would wear on the left-hand sleeve of their uniform. The force has also been awarded a specially designed flag and an emblem.
The Vice President lauded the efforts of Gujarat Police. They have introduced many innovations in policing such as the Suraksha Setu programme for community policing and Cyber Suraksha Kavach for securing the cyberspace.
Mr Naidu will attend the ongoing Rann Utsav at Dhorodo, Kutch this evening. Earlier, he addressed the 62nd Convocation ceremony of Sardar Patel University in Vallabh Vidyanagar.
