A visually-impaired man from Ahmedabad named Ashwin Thakkar was a telephone operator at a hotel in the city when the deadly novel coronavirus gripped the nation in its iron clutches. With the lockdown in place to curb its spread, it had an adverse impact on the economy as well. Therefore, the crisis resulted in him becoming unemployed.

However, this did not break his resolve. He decided to come up with his own business to earn a livelihood for his family. Along with his wife, he set up stalls which sold the fruit of the season as well as some homemade snacks. The sale began in the month of May and June.

Speaking to ANI, Thakkar mentioned the items that were on sale, “I started selling ‘Kairi’ (raw mango) then I started selling dried dates and now I have started selling homemade Gujarati snacks.” The dried dates came from Kutch from which he later switched to selling a native snack called ‘Farsan’.

On losing his job, he did not let his disability become a liability for him. He had his wife for support during such tough times. He was also inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Aatmanirbhar’ mantra which he adapted in his current business.

“As I am not able to see, many people come to help me. But, I believe that if we are fit we should take the help of anyone. Everyone has some talent in themselves and if they work hard, they will achieve success. I have learned how to be ‘Aatmanirbhar’,” Thakkar further added.

Under ANI’s above-posted tweet, netizens lauded Thakkar’s effort and wished him all the best for the business’ future. “Highly appreciated efforts! Boss! Wishing the couple with success and happiness in life,” one user added. Another user said, “Hats off to you!”

His latest venture is seeming to be quite successful. Keeping that in mind, Thakkar and his wife also plan to open a sweet stall for Dusshera and Diwali.
