US President JoeBiden on Wednesday announced sanctions against military leaders in Myanmar

(INDSAMACHAR)(11/02/2021) President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that his administration will impose sanctions against those involved in last week’s military coup in Myanmar and demanded that the country immediately return power to that nation’s democratically elected government.

The sanctions will target military leaders who directed the coup, as well as their business interests and close family members. The first round of specific individuals targeted for the sanctions will be identified later this week, Biden said.

His administration will also impose export controls and freeze U.S. assets that benefit Myanmar’s government, but will continue to uphold support for health care and other benefits that directly support the country’s citizens.

The president said he signed an executive order enabling the U.S. to impose sanctions on the military leaders who directed the takeover, as well as their family members and their business interests. The U.S. will announce the first rounds of sanctions targets this week, Biden said.

In addition, the U.S. is taking steps to prevent the military leaders of Myanmar from accessing about $1 billion in Burmese funds held in the U.S. by freezing those assets, Biden said.

In remarks at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House on Wednesday, Biden called on the military to release activists and political leaders, including popular civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy. Alluding to widespread protests, he said: “Violence against those asserting their democratic rights is unacceptable, and we’re going to keep calling it out.”
