The tale of ‘selective’ media and rising crime against women in Chhattisgarh

One “Nirbhaya” made all 130 cr indians cry and unite, irrespective of religion or political inclination, everyone fought for her and after a battle for 8 long years, justice was finally delivered.

But, that was not the end of such cases!! This country has countless such Nirbhaya’s in almost every state who dont even get the attention of Media and People.

Ever heard of Chhattisgarh? Yeah a small state with 2.7 cr people approximately, Each day about 6 rape cases are registered here and countless go unreported. Ever thought why no mainstream media  cover the crimes and atrocities on women in Chhattisgarh? Even I did, but failed to comprehend on what parameters do they judge if or not to outrage over crimes as henious as rapes and murders. Even the state news agencies themselves don’t find these crimes “appealing” enough to give them the attention or coverage required. Its like the media sets out to pick and choose the crime stories that sell.

From a Madarsa teacher to an IPS officer and DME, all accused of rapes, molestation and then murdering the victims ranging from  4 year old to a 45 year old females. what do the state ministers say? They say: the state’s rape case is not as big  as the other rape crimes in other states, hence no outrage is required.

The mentality and the sheer audacity to compare two equally heinous crimes against women and humanity reinforces my belief that

the ‘selective’ media and the opportunistic politicians continues to fail women victims of crime and actively create false narratives on an issues like violence against women for there agendas.

BALRAMPUR AND MARWAHI:

Two teenage girls were  raped by minors In Balrampur and Marwahi district of the state.

1) Police arrested a 17-year-old boy on charges of raping and killing a 14-year-old teenager in Balrapur district and throwing the body into a well.

Police officials said a villager in Shankargarh police had reported  that on June 24 his 14-year-old  daughter left the house with her friend and did not return.  On June 27, the body of the daughter was recovered from a well. The body was sent for postmortem and a case was filed.

the post-mortem report found that the girl was raped and had a head injury that led to her death.  When the police started questioning the girl’s friend and others, it was found that she was last seen with a 17-year-old boy. The accused was arrested and Upon questioning he confessed to the crime.

2) A case of rape of a seven-year-old girl by showing fear of coronavirus was reported in Gorella-Pendra-Marwahi district.  Police have detained two minors in connection with the incident.

Marwahi police station in-charge Sunil Kumar said that the girl’s mother lodged a report at the police station late on July 1 night that her seven-year-old daughter had gone to the forest to collect wood in the afternoon.  After coming back from the forest, she told that two minor boys surrounded her on the way and that she had been infected with the corona virus and needed treatment.

The girl’s mother told the police that on the pretext of treatment, the two boys took the girl to one of the accused’s house and raped her there.  Kumar said that on the complaint of the girl’s mother, the police registered a case and the next day both the boys were taken into custody and booked under appropriate sections of IPC.

These are just a few of the reported cases in span of 5 months which never got into the flashlight of news media cause these were not “sensational” enough for them. The muted response on all these cases from the mainstream media and the state government is loud enough to understand what they stand for.

As visible, the majority of the accused and convicts are minors. While the judiciary had lenient punishments for minors even in heinous crimes, it pushes them towards committing such crimes because they know they can get away with it easily. What we need here are stricter laws for crimes done by minors to make this society a better place for all. Just in some European and Western countries, the minors are tried as adults for heinous crimes. Swift justice is the need of the hour to dish out harshest punishments to perpetrators.

We will eventually find a cure for coronavirus soon but to rid ourselves from all these monsters in society is going to be a long battle, especially when the perpetrators are minors. In some Western and European countries the minor are tried as adults when the nature of the crime is too heinous,

We need some unprecedented changes in the laws like that to deliver swift justice to the victims and dish out the harshest punishment to perpetrators.
