A 700-year-old temple structure in Tamil Nadu’s Mamallapuram, collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday. It was portions of the roof, part of the Sthalasayana Perumal Temple Mandapam, that collapsed.
The granite roof standing over the pillars of the Gangaikondan Mandapam broke down and fell on to the roads. The centuries old structure is in dire need of maintenance as it is damp and also has developed several cracks over the years.
The mandapam dates back to the 14th century and is now maintained by the state’s Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowments department.
The structure is used for conducting rituals during festivals. During the Chithirai Brahmotsavam, the deity is taken out on a procession and then placed in this madapam for rituals.
There were no casualties in the incident.
Mamallapuram made headlines recently during the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
